Borosilicate Stirring Rods for Manual Mixing Operations
Glass stirring rods handle the mixing tasks that magnetic stirrers can't reach. You need them for thick suspensions, small-volume samples, and quick manual agitation. They're chemically inert and won't leach contaminants into your preparations.
Type 1 Class A borosilicate construction resists thermal shock from -196°C to +500°C. The smooth, non-porous surface cleans easily between uses and won't harbor residues. Autoclave them alongside your glassware or rinse with appropriate solvents.
Length and Diameter Variations Available
Standard lengths run from 150mm to 400mm with diameters between 3mm and 10mm. Short rods work in test tubes and small beakers. Longer rods reach the bottom of graduated cylinders and tall vessels.
Match the diameter to your vessel size. Thin 3mm rods fit narrow tubes but flex under pressure. Thicker 8-10mm rods provide rigidity for breaking up precipitates and stirring viscous solutions. Keep multiple sizes on hand for different tasks.
Thermal Shock Resistance Properties
Low thermal expansion coefficient means you can move these rods between temperature extremes without cracking. Borosilicate composition handles rapid temperature changes that would shatter soda-lime glass.
Use them to:
- Stir solutions on hot plates during heating
- Transfer samples from Dessicator chambers to ambient conditions
- Mix cryogenic preparations without pre-cooling
- Guide liquid flow during distillation setups with Dimroth condenser or Coiled-straight condenser, double layer assemblies
Applications in Solution Preparation
Break up solid reagents at the bottom of flasks. Guide liquid transfers from burettes without splashing. Scrape precipitates from vessel walls during filtration. Mix buffer solutions that are too small for magnetic stirring.
They complement automated equipment. While Pumps and Watering pumps handle bulk liquid transfers, glass rods give you manual control for precise additions. Essential for titrations where you need to dislodge indicator from walls or ensure complete mixing at endpoints.
Store them in dedicated holders to prevent rolling and breakage. Inspect regularly for chips or cracks that compromise chemical resistance. Replace damaged rods immediately to maintain contamination-free workflows.
