Pear-Shaped Geometry for Rotary Evaporation and Concentration

I've used pear-shaped flasks for years in my rotovap work, and honestly, they've become my go-to choice for solvent recovery. The tapered bottom design is brilliant - it concentrates your sample perfectly as the solvent evaporates, making it so much easier to recover those precious compounds without leaving residue stuck in corners. Unlike a Round Bottom Flask with two necks where you might lose sample in the curved bottom, the pear shape guides everything down to that pointy tip.

Optimal Shape for Solvent Recovery Processes

Heavy-wall borosilicate construction means these flasks can handle the thermal stress of repeated heating cycles without cracking. I've put mine through hundreds of distillations, and they're still going strong. The ergonomic pear-shaped base maximizes surface area contact with your heating bath, giving you faster, more efficient evaporation rates than standard round bottoms.
  • Tapered bottom concentrates samples and simplifies transfer
  • Wider top section reduces bumping and provides better vapor distribution
  • Annealed glass withstands temperatures up to 500°C without stress fractures
  • Uniform wall thickness ensures even heat distribution across the entire flask

Volume Ranges and Neck Joint Standards

Available from 25mL to 2000mL capacities, with standard ground glass joints in 14/20, 19/22, and 24/29 sizes. I typically keep 250mL and 500mL sizes stocked because they cover most of my concentration needs. The standard taper joints connect seamlessly with condensers, adapters, and other rotovap components - no need for special fittings like you'd encounter with a Buchner Flask with socket.

Advantages in Rotovap and Distillation Applications

When I'm running back-to-back extractions, pear-shaped flasks outperform regular round bottoms every time. The pointed base makes decanting immiscible liquids incredibly easy - you can separate layers with precision that's just not possible with spherical bottoms. For filtration setups, pair these with a Filter funnel with glass disc for seamless solvent transfers. If you need multiple addition ports, consider a Round Bottom Flask with three necks, vertical sockets instead, but for straightforward concentration work, the single-neck pear shape is unbeatable.
  • Reduced solvent waste through efficient sample recovery
  • Better visibility of sample level during evaporation
  • Lower center of gravity provides stability on heating mantles
  • Compatible with all standard rotary evaporator systems
